Coming up on 6th March, 2023…

Insperience

An intensive workshop in insperiencing the text than experiencing it. Actors often struggle to create characters because they search for external handles to understand their character. They rarely look into the text. Every author hides a horde of easter eggs inside the text and in the hands of the intelligent and well-aware actor these are rich veins of gold to flesh the character they play on stage into its rich magnificence. What are these easter eggs? Come explore with us!

Mohan Reading 1080

The View from Within
A Performative Reading of Mohan Narayanan’s playsWhat is Truth? – asked Pontius Pilate. Since then, or probably even before…human race has been grappling with the question. Today, more than ever, in the age of Alternative Facts and Official Truths, it is more relevant. Is what is True Real or what we see as Reality Truth or is everything perceived? Also, because a truth or reality can easily be justified, does it become Truth and truism? These are some things that strike one when we read Mohan’s plays.Mohan Narayanan Chennai-based international author of 6 works of fiction, all very highly sold and ranked on top internet searches (The Payyoli Quartet, Austin Colours and Cut) and deeply entrenched in Indian tradition, culture, philosophy as well as superstitions and the beliefs that go with it, is the author of 5 full-length plays too. His works constantly juxtapose belief systems and scientific proofs or parallels, so they constantly swing between tension and adventure. His 1st play, SONS, was produced way back in 1985, deals with 3 men and a woman stuck in an airport, due to inclement weather, and involved in a game of role-playing of mythological characters. They weave in and out of masks and real selves. The result is shattering and makes for a whodunit!Since 2001, his plays have been periodically produced and performed in Chennai as well as, as far as Hollywood. His ASHWAHA was premiered in 2001 by The Madras Players, directed by Dipankar Mukherjee (Pangea World Theater, Minneapolis), BIRDS by Anita Khanzadian-Jones for the Hollywood Interactive (Los Angeles) and later performed thrice in Chennai. THE TRUTH was given a 2008 World Theatre Day international Premiere by Masquerade in Chennai. Shortly to be premiered in 2019-20 is his FLIPSIDES – a play dealing with people and their Doppelgänger in Multiverse and parallel universes.Mohan is currently working on his 7th novel. His AUSTIN COLOURS, approved by the Hollywood Script-writers Guild for filming, has attracted the interest of ANG LEE, the epochal Oscar-winning film maker. AUSTIN COLOURS, prior to that, may see its theatrical international premiere in CHENNAI sometime in 2020.Masquerade is proud to bring to the public all his plays in one evening of Performed Reading. Select scenes from each of his works will be presented with a meta-narrative linking them both thematically as well as in form, the way these techniques surface across all his works.Come join us at CURIOPLAY, Anandha Road, Alwarpet, Chennai on JUNE 30, 2019 from 5:15 pm.Through and after the performance audience can interact with Mohan Narayanan in a moderated interface with the author. The evening is a non-ticketed, FREE TO ATTEND event. LIMITED SEATS (50 seating), so do email masquerade.madras@gmail.com to reserve your presence. In the cast: Ashvi KS, Dhiraj Athreya, Indrani Krishnaier, KK, Shrivatz Agaram, Shruthi Prabakaran, Uthsav Raj, Varun RamakrishnanDirected by KK

We’re not looking to boost “Reached so many people” but look forward to your actual footfalls. Hope to see you there.ABOUT : The Bear & Beanbag Children’s Theater was set up as an internal wing of Masquerade – the performance group, to channelise our theatrical endeavours and energies that would best concern to serve the interest of the children (5 to 7 year olds) and the tweens (8 to 12 year olds). We strongly believe in a non-exclusive community and our belief in theatre is so too. However, due to constraints of certain performance requirements, there are times when children cannot be brought into theatre for grown-ups. Hence to clearly draw lines, we set up Landing Stage Youth Theatre Group in 2001, Masquerade Youth Theatre in 2009 and The Bear and Beanbag Children’s in 2010. At Masquerade, we believe in talent development. Potential children are identified and training workshops are offered during Summer Holidays. A lot of these children between 8 and 12 keep returning to these workshops and when the reach 13, they transition into the Youth Theatre. At the Youth Theatre too similar process happens. Today we have about 5 of our group who started as children at 6 or 7 yrs and have either moved into MYT and even mainstream Masquerade. Our most experienced actor started as a 6 year old even before the founding days of The Bear and Beanbag and today has gone through 4 summers at MYT. She also occasionally makes her sallies into Masquerade. So in case you liked our performance, think that our program sounds good, email us at masquerade@masquerade.in and we’ll get back to you appropriately.

WTD # 15

As has been in the past 14 years…

masquerade

invites you

to

Live the Joy of Theater…

The Commedia dell’Arte Way!!!

(WELL… NOT QUITE ENTIRELY DELL’ARTE UP THERE…

WE’RE JUST EXPERIMENTING THE FORM AND LEARNING!!!)

These are days of much maligned relationships on the Indo-Italian front! The governments are fighting… rousing rabbles and fishing in troubled waters… the Envoys are on alert. But not us in the Theater. This year’s World Theater Day message comes from the great Italian Theater personality – DARIO FO!And we at Masquerade are taking a leaf out of his work. As we step into 20 years of existence at Masquerade (started 1994 -), we turn a new leaf….

A devised work-in-progress…

Our very Indian Sanskrit theater in a very European package…

MRICHCHAKATIKA

(THE LITTLE CLAY CART)

written around 2nd Century B.C. by King Shudraka

About the ProductionDevised and performed as a story-narrative by seven aspiring performance-enthusiasts, it is a work in progress… and hence not ticketed. Also, keeping in tradition with the Commedia dell’Arte story telling-performing tradition, we plan to travel this show around… each time improvising, improving on previous performances… and PASSING THE HAT around. That too is a dell’Arte tradition.“Masquerade” brings to you a devised dell’Arte performance of The Little Clay Cart to commemorate the world theatre day.Date: 28th of March 2013Time: 7.15 p.mVenue: ”SPACES”- #1 Elliot’s Beach road, Besant Nagar.Entry strictly restricted to 75 blockings. John Patrick’s CHEATING CHEATERS

June 3, 2012 at 11:18 am · Filed under Announcements· Edit

presents

Faced with the responsibility of looking after their orphaned niece, Theresa and Angelica, two middle-aged sisters, have settled on the idea of impersonating begging nuns in order to send Tania to art school in Europe…But as the play begins they have run into double trouble. An agile young cat burglar is about to make off with their ill-gotten gains; and a suspicious policeman has followed Theresa (and her collection bucket) home…However, all is not as desperate as it seems, as the personable young thief happens to be a medical student who steals to pay his tuition – and is willing to consider alternative means of fund raising !While the cop, as it turns out, is also not above taking what he can on the side. So the four join forces for some inspired larceny and things go swimmingly — or do until the supposedly saintly Tania turns up unannounced – and the confusion that ensues!!!!Masquerade Youth Theatre starts this season with John Patrick’s Cheating Cheaters as a tribute to Chennai’s most loved genre – comedy…Directed by Harshavardhan Ganesan & Vaidhya M SundarTickets Starting at INR 150 (advance bookings get INR 50 discount)BROUGHT TO YOU BY www.ticketgoose.comVenue: TN Rajaratnam Auditroium, (RA Puram opposite MGR Janaki College Durgabhai Deshmukh road, next to Adyar Bridge)Date & Time: 16th June, 3:30 & 6:30 pmCall +91 9710736130 or +91 99401 38749 for details and direct booking

Hi, currently we’re not taking any new members, cuz there’s no work or training happening. But do email us at masquerade.madras@gmail.com giving info about your work, residence, time available to give for theatre, a little about any previous theatre experience. Let’s see how it goes… Cheers.
