THE ISLAND

The Island

The IslandMasquerade, founded in 1994, into its 20 year, has been celebrating March 27, as part of the world theatre community, for the 16th straight year. This year, on the 54th World Theatre Day, Masquerade presents to the Chennai theater community, a timeless play with lasting resonance and a voice of urgency, anger, desperation, hope… THE ISLAND – written in 1973 by the South African legend Athol Fugard and devised then along with his two actors John Kani & Winston Ntshona.

How does it feel to be imprisoned and taken on a three-legged walk with your cell mate to the beach, forced each day to empty the beach sands from your pit, using a wheelbarrow, into your mate’s pit, only to have him do the same? Endless torture! THE ISLAND is about two prisoners on the Robben Island (the same Island prison where the Late Nelson Mandela was incarcerated during his struggle against apartheid), condemned for life, and ironically rehearsing a performance of Sophocles’ ANTIGONE, itself a play against oppression and right to freedom of existence and expression. John receives news that his sentence is commuted and he is soon to be released. How does this news affect John? How does this affect Winston, the younger one? Do they go on to perform in the prison?

The current performance, under the artistic direction of KK, is devised by two of Masquerade’s new brigade of actors – Shrivatz Agaram (John) & Aravind R Vyaas (Winston) – and will be performed over an approximate duration of 80 mins. Lighting conceived and managed by Baskar, sound by G.D. Prasad, play an essential part in this two-hander. The performance is strictly for mature audience.

Special Closed Invite show on March 27, 2014 on World Theater Day. If you are a theatre artist and residing in Chennai, do get in touch with us to attend the show.

If you are a theater enthusiast and would like to support our theater ventures to keep amateur non-profit theater in Chennai alive… then, Donor passes are available at www.eventjini.com and directly at 9840297872 / 9940542821. MRICHCHAKATIKA – The Little Clay Cart

WTD # 15

World Theater Day – March 27 – Wednesday

As has been in the past 14 years…

MASQUERADE – the performance group

invites you

to

Live the Joy of Theater…

The Commedia dell’Arte Way!!!

These are days of much maligned relationships on the Indo-Italian front! The governments are fighting… rousing rabbles and fishing in troubled waters… the Envoys are on alert. But not us in the Theater. This year’s World Theater Day message comes from the great Italian Theater personality – DARIO FO!

And we at Masquerade are taking a leaf out of his work. As we step into 20 years of existence at Masquerade (started 1994 -), we turn a new leaf….

A devised work-in-progress…

Our very Indian Sanskrit theater in a very European package…

MRICHCHAKATIKA (The Little Clay Cart)

written around 2nd Century B.C. by King Shudraka

About the Production

Devised and performed as a story-narrative by seven aspiring performance-enthusiasts, it is a work in progress… and hence not ticketed. Also, keeping in tradition with the Commedia dell’Arte story telling-performing tradition, we plan to travel this show around… each time improvising, improving on previous performances… and PASSING THE HAT around. That too is a dell’Arte tradition.

“Masquerade” brings to you a devised dell’Arte performance of The Little Clay Cart to commemorate the world theatre day.

John Patrick’s CHEATING CHEATERS

presents

Faced with the responsibility of looking after their orphaned  niece, Theresa and Angelica, two middle-aged sisters, have settled on the idea of impersonating begging nuns in order to send Tania to art school in Europe…

But as the play begins they have run into double trouble. An agile young cat burglar is about to make off with their ill-gotten gains; and a suspicious policeman has followed Theresa (and her collection bucket) home…

However, all is not as desperate as it seems, as the personable young thief happens to be a medical student who steals to pay his tuition – and is willing to consider alternative means of fund raising !

While the cop, as it turns out, is also not above taking what he can on the side. So the four join forces for some inspired larceny and things go swimmingly — or do until the supposedly saintly Tania turns up unannounced – and the confusion that ensues!!!!

Masquerade Youth Theatre starts this season with John Patrick’s Cheating Cheaters as a tribute to Chennai’s most loved genre – comedy…
